Macdonald, Ewen (Ewan), 1870-1943

A postcard, postdated August 20 1911, bearing a message in Ewen (Ewan) Macdonald's handwriting addressed to "Mr. G. B. MacMillan". George Boyd MacMillan (1881-1953) was a Scottish journalist and writer, and a favourite correspondent of L.M. Montgomery. The two were first introduced, by letter, in 1903, through an American writer who was developing a circle of literary pen friends. Although Montgomery and MacMillan only met briefly in-person, during her 1911 honeymoon in Scotland, their voluminous exchange of letters, postcards, and gifts continued until late 1941, just months before Montgomery's death. PARTIAL TRANSCRIPT: "Station Hotel Carlise [?] Aug 20 - 1911 Dear Mr. MacMillan: We came as far as Carlisle yesterday. We had good accommodation as far as Newcastle. But the train from there has been so crowded that many including myself had to stand! much of the way. We miss your company very much. Yours sincerely. E. Macd."
